York & Starlight PA Posts: 2733 | The Plueger Medalist 1494 (and all Medalist's) have quite a large arbor but not a large overall diameter like modern large arbor fly reels. It depends on whether you are putting on a double taper or weight forward line. A WF7 has less mass than a DT6. Also the type of backing, braided Dacron, or gel spun will also dictate how much you can wind on. In case you are unaware gel spun backing has a much smaller diameter than braided Dacron for the same break strength. I have seen braided Dacron in 10#, 20#, and 30# break strengths. If the target species seldom get bigger than 10# then you could use that backing. I think though if you are using a WF6 or WF7 you will be able to put on at least 75 yards. | |
