York & Starlight PA Posts: 2733 | You want a line that is matched to the "line weight" of the rod you will be using. Most modern fly rods have the length of the rod and the preferred line weight inscribed on the butt section of the rod near the cork. It will say something like 9' #5 or 8 1/2' #6. You want to buy a weight forward line as it will be the easiest to learn to cast. Do not buy a level line. A weight forward line means just that; most of the heavy line to effect the cast is going to be in the first 30', there will also be a nice tapered section in the very front to slim down the line and create a smooth transition from the fly line to the butt of your tapered leader. | |
