Moderator Palmyra PAPosts: 3233 | As promised, some photos of the fish and fishers from Jardines del Rey. Most of the fish were bonefish, but we also caught snapper, and the last day Mike caught a permit, a very wily and difficult fish: a real trophy. We headed out each morning in the little bonefish skiffs to challenging conditions: strong winds and fish that were not as cooperative as in past trips, according to those who had been there before. Mike and I were guided by Elder, and he had a knack for finding fish, though. It’s essential that someone sees the fish and knows exactly where to put the fly and when to strike. Mike had some skill in this, but I couldn’t see anything the first day, and only slowly learned what to look for. Elder became my eyes, and his expert coaching allowed me to put flies where they needed to go, and told me how to move them and when to strike. Without him I would have caught nothing. But I did catch fish, and nothing I've ever seen can empty a reel of its line and backing as fast as a bonefish. It's an experience like none other. And, by the last day I was seeing more and more of the phantoms of the flats, as bonefish are sometimes called. The other thing I’ll mention was the close camaraderie of the group of 16 fishers put together by Patrick Fulkrod. It was a unique experience to become a member such a warm and fun fraternity, and I hope to join them again for future trips. | |
