Pictures of 1229 Insect Specimens:
Libellulidae Dragonfly Adult
View 3 PicturesThis specimen of Libella saturata, the flame skimmer dragonfly, is the only invertebrate in this site's collection that I caught by hook and line. It swooped down and attacked my dry fly on the Firehole River, where it lived as a nymph in the hot water near the geothermal springs and geyser runoff. Brachycentrus americanus (American Grannom) Caddisfly Larva
View 13 PicturesBoth the genus ID (Merritt & Cummins) and species ID (Flint 1984) are pretty confident for this larva, a nice example of a common western caddisfly. It was by far the most abundant insect in my kicknet sample on this trip, and many of the rocks in the fast riffle where I sampled had dozens of these larvae clinging on. Female Pictetiella expansa Stonefly Adult
View 12 PicturesBased on photos, this specimen seems to key out (using Merritt & Cummins 4th Edition) to Pictetiella expansa, but some of the characteristics aren't 100 % clear. However, that species is listed as occurring near Puget Sound and the head markings are similar to (albeit not a perfect match for) those of a male from Colorado in the scientific literature here: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Head-and-pronotum (Pronotum: The top of the insect prothorax.)-dorsal (Dorsal: Top.)-Pictetiella-expansa-Boulder-Co-Colorado-North-Fork-Middle_fig1_315373449
