The Yellowstone River emerging from Hayden Valley. I briefly hooked and then lost a very nice cutthroat trout here, just a few yards downstream of the boundary above which no fishing is allowed. I wasn't even planning to fish, just stopped to take this picture and saw the big trout rising rhythmically to Paraleptophlebia duns. It was too much to pass up. Flying ants were falling very thick on the water during a beautiful Montana evening in August. They were collected in great numbers in this eddy, which made it difficult to entice a trout with a fly amidst all the naturals, but a few nice browns were fooled. From Mystery Creek # 227 in Montana.

This 14.5-inch, beautifully crossed cutbow put up one of the best fights I've ever had from a fish anywhere near that size and was one of the most memorable of my 2018 Montana trip, despite not being in the top ten for length. I had to chase it a good distance downstream and thread my rod through some brush to bring it to hand. From Rock Creek in Montana.
